Note: Originally appearing in 2 parts in Analog as "The Ethical Engineer", this story was expanded
from 42,000 words to a 60,000 word novel.
This book has also been adapted into a series of comic books.
Dedication: "For John W.Campbell without whose aid this book - and a good
percentage of modern science fiction - would never have been written."
Jason dinAlt is kidnapped and taken to an unknown and savage planet, where slavers capture anyone they
chance upon and sell them to one of the settlements.
The settlements exist in various stages of technological development, where the 'magic' of technology and
science is jealously guarded by the evil Brotherhood. It
is dinAlt's task to free the people from the oppression of the Brotherhood.
