The John W. Campbell Memorial Award was created by Harry Harrison
and Brian W. Aldiss, and is presented in July for the best science fiction
novel published in English during the previous year. The winner is selected
by a committee of academic critics and SF writers. Although its selections have been criticised in the past for being 'over-intellectual' the award provides an opportunity for works to be recognised which might not prove popular with fans, who vote for the Hugo, or writers, who vote for the Nebula.
